Beaudin Wins Season

The fleet computers have finally stopped whirring and the results are  in: Paul Beaudin’s loulou is the 2011 fleet 6 champion.

Counting a total of seven victories out of 25 starts, Beaudin still just narrowly beat out Joerg Esdorn and Duncan Hennes on Kincsem.  Kincsem sailed six fewer races and had one fewer throw out. The difference was enough for loulou to edge Kincsem by a score of .9169 to .9137 under the Cox Sprauge system, which weights finishes based on the number of participants in each race.

The margin between the two boats was so narrow that when fleet scorers first ran the calculations, Kincsem came out on top.  The numbers were then carefully checked, the computer rebooted, and the spreadsheet re-run multiple times with the final results showing loulou on top.  Kincsem completed the season with five race wins.

Third place went to Eclipse with a score of .9055.  Damian Emery’s team recorded nine victories over 25 races.

Beaudin won the Fleet 6 championship in his first full season racing loulou.  He is not exactly a newcomer to the boat, however, having raced 105s when the class first debuted.  It was Beaudin, in fact, who first helped the Kincsem team set up their boat in their first season years ago.  Beaudin also took over the  job of fleet captain at the beginning of the season, a move that Cox Sprague should also figure a way to count.

As might be expected, Beaudin credits his new Doyle sails for improving his speed over the past year.   As a sailmaker in the firm’s City Island loft, he spent considerable time revising and improving his designs.

All told, 12 boats sailed enough races (18) to qualify for the season championship.  Twenty five J105s participated in Fleet 6 events.  The final order of the prolific-enough dozen:

1.) loulou, Paul Beaudin

2.) Kincsem, Joerg Esdorn and Duncan Hennes

3.) Eclipse, Damian Emery

4.) Revelation, George and Alex Wilbanks

5.) Gumption, Kevin Grainger

6.) Conundrum, Jeremy Henderson and Harald Edegran

7.) Morning Glory, Carl Olsson

8.) Shakedown, Jordan Mindich

9.) Tolo, Norman Kiljarian

10.) Bottle Rocket, Glenn Marck

11.) Jouster, Julian Croxall

12.) Stratos, Marcus Wunderlich
